My breakfast smoothie obsession

To accompany my new training regimen I have been trying to eat a little bit cleaner. I’m not all that unhealthy of an eater but I figure any small steps I can take to replace my pizza with a spinach salad or anything of the sort could only help me reach my goal times.

My breakfast foods don’t have a huge need for a makeover (I’m a greek yogurt, fruit, wheat toast with peanut butter type of girl). But for the sake of mixing it up I dusted off my blender and have found a new breakfast obsession.

Don't knock it 'til you try it.

Don’t knock it ’til you try it.

Yes, it looks quite a bit like sewage. Go ahead and cringe away. But don’t be fooled, this is easily the best tasting smoothie I have ever had. The magic green ingredient is spinach, which adds healthfully fantastic benefits but doesn’t change the taste a bit. The recipe is below (makes 1 smoothie). Prepare to have your world rocked.

At least 1 giant handful of spinach (or more, it would take a whole lot to have any affect on the taste)
1 frozen banana (must be frozen)
1 giant tablespoon of almond butter
1 giant tablespoon of flaxseeds (this is optional and you can use more if you want, like the spinach you can’t taste these but they’re fantastically full of omega 3’s and fiber)
1/3 of a cup of skim milk

Combine all the ingredients in your blender and press the button to make it go-go until your smoothie is… smooth. Then enjoy!

  1. My husband and I have been drinking green shakes for breakfast for a couple of months. I was skeptical at first, but I’ve grown to love them!

    • I love spinach but was still kind of weirded out by the idea of it at first. I’ve been drinking this same one for breakfast for 2 and a half weeks and still am not sick of it. Thanks for the comment. I love your blog! And am super impressed by your Boston qualifying first marathon! Good luck with training!

    • I know, I know. I thought the exact same thing (love ’em both but they just don’t seem right together). I promise you can’t even taste the spinach though. Wouldn’t even know it was there if the drink wasn’t green. Make sure to use fresh spinach though – not canned, frozen or anything like that.

  2. I love this kind of stuff. Can’t wait to try this recipe. Sounds yummy and healthy! Now if I can only get Ry to drink it hehe.
